In preparing this program, we were asked to develop a project oriented simultaneously toward both the resident and transient populations of Fátima, while also promoting integration with its most significant surrounding element — the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima.
Given the human and environmental characteristics of the context, strongly marked by the Sanctuary grounds, the conceptual solution focused on creating a composition that is aesthetically restrained and inclusive of pedestrian spaces, in order to provide a welcoming environment for both visitors and residents alike.
By controlling the form and volume of the development (the spatial interplay of “solids” and “voids”), we aimed to give the ensemble a human scale, addressing the conditions of shelter and circulation while also providing opportunities for leisure and ritual.
